An Independent Certification Authority
Artisanal Foundation is a standards-setting, verification, and enforcement body. It defines, assesses, audits, and enforces what qualifies for the Certified Artisanal™ certification mark.
Why This Exists
The term “artisanal” is applied across consumer food products without enforceable definition, verifiable criteria, or independent oversight. There is no regulatory framework, no audit mechanism, and no consequence for misuse.
This means a mass-produced product and a genuinely small-batch, heritage-process product may carry the same unverified claim. Buyers, retailers, and consumers have no reliable mechanism to distinguish documented practice from marketing language.
Artisanal Foundation was established to correct this. It provides a structured, independently administered standard against which food product ranges are assessed, verified, and, where they qualify, certified under enforceable terms.
Institutional Function
The Foundation operates as a definitional, evaluative, and enforcement authority. It is responsible for maintaining the standard, administering the assessment process, issuing the certification mark, conducting periodic audits, and overseeing compliance.
It does not consult, sell products, operate as a marketplace, or advocate on behalf of individual brands. It does not participate in promotional activities or trend-driven positioning.
Its function is institutional: to maintain a defensible standard, to verify compliance through documented evidence, and to enforce the integrity of the Certified Artisanal mark through revocation where necessary.
Governing Principles
Definitional Precision
The standard is specific enough to be assessed and audited. Subjective or aspirational criteria are excluded.
Independent Verification
Certification decisions are made on the basis of documented evidence, not affiliation, payment, or commercial relationship.
Selectivity
The mark is granted only where the applicable standard is met. Not every applicant will qualify. The assessment is rigorous and evidence-based.
Enforceability
The mark is a controlled certification mark. Misuse or misrepresentation is subject to revocation and public delisting.
Ongoing Accountability
Certification is subject to periodic review. Status is maintained only through continued compliance with the certified standards.
